PAUL’S FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY
When certain prophets and teachers, Barnabas and Simon that was called Niger, and Lucas of Cyrene, Manaen and Saul, ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said “Separate me, Barnabas and Saul for the work where unto i have called them”. This happen in ANTIOCH.
After they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
They went to Seleucia and from there they moved to Cyprus. They preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. John was also with them.
When they got to Paphos, they saw a certain sorcerer, a false prohet, a Jew whose name was Barjesus. The false prophet was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulua, a wise man who called for Barnabas and Saul so that they could preach to him. The sorcerer opposed the teaching of Saul and Barnabas. Paul (Saul) filled with the Holy Spirit rebuked him, saying ” O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right way of the Lord? Behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season”. The sorcerer became blind and this made the deputy to believe Paul, Barnabas and John in Perga in Pamphylia. In this place John Mark left the group and went back to Jerusalem.
PAUL AND BARNABAS IN
ANTIOCH IN PISIDIA
Paul and Barnabas went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. Paul delivered his great sermon. He told them how God had chosen the Israelite and how God led them out of Egypt to Canaan after 40 years in the wilderness. He traced their history from time God gave them judges to resurrection of Jesus Christ. He advised them to accept Jesus and that they will be forgiven their sins.
A great number of people gathered the next Sabbath but the Jews were filled with envy and spoke against those things which Paul had spoken. Paul and Barnabas stated that it was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to them and seeing that they were not ready to accept t, they would turn to the Gentiles. The Gentiles happily accepted the Gospel but the Jews stired up the people against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them out of their land.
Paul and Barnabas shook off the dust off their feet against them and they left there for Iconium.
PAUL AND BARNABAS IN LYSTRA
Paul and Barnabas healed a cripple. When the people of Lystra saw what Paul and Barnabas had done, said in their language, “The gods are come down to use in the likeness of men”. They called Paul HERMES and Barnabas ZEUS. The priest of Zeus wanted to sacrifice to them but Paul and Barnabas stopped them from doing so, saying “We are also men of like passions with you, we brought you good news that you turn from your vain worship and worship the living God”.
The Jews persuaded the people to stone Paul. They drew him out of the city a, believing him to be dead. However, Paul rose up and they departed to Derbe the next day.
